Sewing Basics

If you’re like me and you first learned to sew on a sewing machine, hand sewing may seem a bit tedious or boring by comparison. However, you have a much better degree of control for tricky pieces and there’s a major bonus - you can sew anywhere you want. Hand sewing and machine sewing are very different art forms, so this section is primarily for the former. If you’re looking to get better at using a sewing machine, your first resource should be your owner’s manual, which will contain specific information about the model and often has company-specific resources available to you.

Sewingiscool.com

As you may have guessed from the website title, sewingiscool.com features a variety of tips and tricks for sewing, fabric, and fashion in general. For hand sewing specifically, I recommend the blog post from R. Geraldi, “A Primer to Hand Sewing: 17 Lessons for Beginners”

Cutesy Crafts

Cutesy Crafts has an excellent article with pictures and video on how to perform very basic stitches. While it suggests more items than I think you need to get started, it’s great for visual learners or someone who wants to stitch along. Link here.

Masterclass

Masterclass has an excellent article with verbal descriptions of how to perform various stitches when sewing by hand. However, the lack of pictures may be an issue if you’re a visual learner. Link here.
